Melissa comes to the firm with 23 years of litigation experience, including time spent as an administrative law judge and a lengthy career as a prosecutor of violent crimes, and abuse and neglect of elders and dependent adults.

Melissa obtained degrees in literature from U.C. San Diego and Iowa State University and worked on her Ph.D. in English Literature at the University of Kansas before deciding to pursue a career in the law. Upon graduation from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1997, Melissa clerked for a district court judge in Minnesota and then prosecuted cases of domestic violence and sexual assault crimes throughout that state of Iowa. When Melissa moved to California in 2004, she worked first for the City of Los Angeles in the violent crimes unit and then for the California Department of Justice as a prosecutor of abuse and neglect of elder and dependent adults. She also served a term as an administrative law judge for the California Department of Public Social Services, where she conducted hearings and issued decisions regarding Medicaid and Social Security benefits. She has dedicated her career to fighting for justice for the people she represents and brings that commitment to her work with Jackson & MacNichol.

Melissa is also a certified mediator, having obtained that certification from Cornell University in 2020.

Melissa has been recognized as a Top Attorney in Elder Law and in Who’s Who of America’s Best Lawyers. She is also a published author, having written articles and training manuals on domestic violence and sexual assault, as well as a cover article on Elder Abuse for Los Angeles Lawyer.

Melissa enjoys spending time with her husband, her son, and three wonderful dogs; she loves to travel and believes her hobbies of knitting, crocheting, quilting, and scrapbooking will serve her well during Maine winters.
